The education I receive at the University of Florida, my experiences in health education and background in diversity prepare me to be a successful health educator. I love my work and look forward to working as a professional in the field.

My course work and instructors enable me to build a strong foundation for my career in planning and implementing health education programs.  I especially benefit from taking courses in women’s health, cultural health, cultural nutrition and having a disease specific course in HIV/AIDS.  Additionally, students at UF take an internship preparation class the semester prior to our internship that assists in the development of the skills we need to be successful leaders in the work place.

During my time as an officer in Eta Sigma Gamma, serving with fellow members of our prestigious honorary teach me group collaboration and the importance of taking initiative.  I adopted leadership skills through planning, leading events, time management, budget management and observing the outstanding leadership of fellow officers and our sponsoring faculty.

The international courses and diverse events through the International Scholar Program enhance my intercultural skills and global learning capabilities.  Gaining a new world perspective allows me to become mindful and considerate for our global society.  This perspective is shaped through immersion of language and cultural norms in other countries and learning the effects of global relationships from ancient civilizations through modern day.  The international events and speakers provide intercultural interaction that help me see the role of global growth and societies.

While working as an intern at the Center of Innovation on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, I learn valuable skills in the workplace.  My mentors push me to take initiative and apply my skills and knowledge.  Helping Veterans get the care they need and assisting in research is exceptionally rewarding.

This year, I plan to sit for my CHES credentials in April.  It is my goal to continue my education and improve as a professional.  Therefore, my short-term goals are obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Nursing followed by my Master of Science in Public Health.  Five years following graduation, I want to work as a public health nurse. This portfolio demonstrates my skills and goals for the future.  Please contact me with any questions.  Thank you for your time in reviewing this portfolio.

Respectfully, Lea Lena
