INTRODUCTION

The three projects were created throughout various health education courses during my junior and senior years at the University of Florida.  These projects allow the practical use of the skills learned in health education course work and provide professional opportunities to identify and discuss health disparities.  They are comprehensive of all dimensions of health and include research, advocacy, teaching, health literacy and diversity.

HIV/AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

This country study on Haiti raises awareness for World Aids Day.  The 2011 - 2015 theme was "Getting to zero: zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths" (WHO, 2013).  The 2016 theme was "Access Equity Rights Now" (AIDS2016).  Based on these campaign years, information and statistics are dated between 2011-2016.  The project is divided into three parts.

  • In Part 1, I created a statistical study of Haiti demographics and the current economic and political situation.

  • Part 2 consists of a epidemiological study of HIV/AIDS in Haiti to include the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS in a specific year, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS, major modes of transmission, number of deaths since epidemic began, specific sub-populations affected, number of people receiving antiretroviral therapy, number of people in need of antiretroviral therapy and education and prevention response along with which organizations provide them.

  •  Part 3 is multi-faceted.  First, I developed a video Public Service Announcement (PSA) to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in Haiti that identifies the transmission, prevention, testing, treatment, and social stigma in the country. This video PSA and the country study and statistics in Parts 1 and 2 are combined into an oral presentation.  The final project is peer reviewed by five peers and feedback is used in the grading scale.  I chose the country, Haiti, by request form.

  • Grade received for oral presentation - "A", 44 out of 45 points.

  • Grade received for peer reviews - "A", 14 out of 15 points.
