Reflection.

The education and experiences I have gained thus far foster diversity and leadership, honor evidence-based research and theory, promote community wellness, and enhance teamwork and communication skills.   Moreover, my passion for nursing and improving the lives and health of all communities will in no doubt enable me to be an absolute professional in the field.

Through my coursework and guidance of instructors, I have developed a strong foundation in the field of nursing.  I have especially benefited from a range of diverse courses and clinical experiences, the International Scholar Program, traveling, and my study abroad experiences.  My experiences in Grenada enabled me to better plan and implement nursing skills and understand how service learning helps overcome health determinants that deter wellness, utilize existing community resources, and advocates for improved awareness and well-being.

While I developed valuable skills in clinical and past experiences, studying abroad in Grenada pushed me to take initiative and apply my skills and knowledge to the fullest potential.  Meeting patients of a different culture and serving them at pop-up health fairs and in their personal homes  increased my ability to adapt in challenging situations, utilize health literacy, and practice ethnic responsibility and self-awareness.

I gained valuable insight in the art of collaboration and the importance of taking initiative.  While serving alongside my peers, we helped each other adopt new leadership skills through planning and leading events, time management, supply management, task delegation, resource identification, advocacy, and research.  Therefore, through this professional development, networking, and service learning, I understand the necessity to incorporate high ethical standards, discipline, and evidence-based theory in meeting the needs of the populations I served in Grenada and beyond.  Furthermore, I am compassionate and devoted to health equity and meeting the health needs of all communities.

While developing the sections found in this portfolio, I had the opportunity to analyse healthcare, cultural, adventure, and social experiences in Grenada.  These diverse experiences and pre-departure classes and training have enhanced my intercultural skills and global learning capabilities.  Through these many different exchanges, I can be more mindful and considerate for our global society.  Thus, these perspectives are shaped through language, cultural immersion, and learning the effects of global relationships.  As a result, I display superior cultural competence as a new nurse and offer the capability to work with diverse populations.

After receiving my BSN, I am continuing my education while continuously improving as a professional.  With that, my five-year goal is to obtain my DNP while working as an RN, to gain experience in clinical skills, and specializing in either oncology or public health.  Please contact me with any questions you may have.  Thank you for taking the time to review this portfolio.

Respectfully,

Lea Lena
